The Georgia High School Association/MaxPreps power ratings are out. As is the case with most sports in Class A, the top 16 public and private schools will advance to the state playoffs in March.

The formula for determining a school’s power rating is five points (5) for each win plus 100 percent of the opponent’s wins, and no points (0) for a loss plus 33 percent of the opponent’s wins. So a win over a team that has won nine games is good for 14 points, while a loss to that team is worth just three points.

Then take that point total and divide by the number of total games played during the regular season, including invitational tournaments and the region tournament. The resulting number is the power rating. Games against out of state opponents and against those opponents playing non-region schedules do not count towards the power rating.

As is the case in football, region tournament champions automatically advance to the state playoffs, and are seeded based on the power rating. After that, the remaining playoff teams are seeded based on the power rating.
