Houston County and Calhoun are new No. 1-ranked teams after three No. 1-ranked teams and three 2015 state champions went down on the opening week of the Georgia high school football season.

In Class AAAAAA, Houston County is on top for the first time in program history. Allatoona, the 2015 champion, lost 30-14 to Cartersville, the defending champion and No. 1 team in AAAA.

In AAA, Calhoun is No. 1 after 2015 champion Westminster was beaten 36-17 by Woodward Academy, the No. 2 team in AAAA.

Colquitt County, the 2015 champion in the highest class, dropped from No. 2 to No. 6 after its 30-game winning streak was ended by Mill Creek 31-24 in a AAAAAAA game.

Buford, a state runner-up last season, retained its No. 1 ranking in AAAAA despite a 30-14 loss to No. 2 Roswell of the highest class. Buford, with 10 state titles since 2000, is the only ranked team in AAAAA with a state championship in the past 15 seasons.
