Class AAAAAA was shaken by two upsets in the round of 16 on Monday.
South Forsyth made the girls quarterfinals for the first time in its 25-year history with a 62-50 victory over defending champion Norcross. South trailed by nine in the fourth quarter on the road against a team that had beaten South 80-32 in the first round a year ago.
But the rematch was expected to be close as Norcross was ranked No. 7, South No. 9. South Forsyth has a sophomore guard, Sarah Myers, who has committed to Maryland. She scored 10 points in overtime, 22 overall. She was 13-of-14 at the free-throw line.
South Forsyth is 25-5. Norcross, which won three state titles in four seasons with graduated state player of the year Diamond DeShields, finished 23-6.
The other upset took place in Powder Springs, where fourth-ranked Hillgrove lost 78-77 in overtime to Lowndes (21-8), the surprise winner of the Region 1-AAAAAA tournament.
Tashia Brown scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds, according to the Valdosta Daily Times. Lowndes made 26 of 48 free throws. Hillgrove senior Mackenzie Engram, who has signed with Georgia, scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds.
