If Saturday is any indication, the Mill Creek Hawks are well on their way to making another state playoff appearance.
The Hawks made easy work of the Brookwood Broncos, 42-7. in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome. The non-region contest between the unranked AAAAAA teams was the season opener for both.
The Hawks put the Broncos in a hole they couldn't escape from late in the first half, when Miles Riley scored on a 70-yard pass from Cameron Turley with 16 seconds remaining, giving Mill Creek a 21-7 lead going into halftime.
Brookwood didn't fare any better in the second half, surrendering 21 third-quarter points, which put the game out of reach.
The Hawks found a variety of ways to pour on the points against Brookwood.
In the run game, Daniel Leconte has a pair of rushing touchdowns. In the passing game, Turley had touchdown passes of 70 and 30 yards. On defense, Aaron Anderson's 66-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third quarter brought the score to it's final margin. Even special teams chipped in, with Joe Thomas returning a blocked punt 40 yards for a score.
Leconte led all rushers with 63 yards on 19 carries, while Turley was 13-of-19 passing with 214 yards. Riley finished with 79 yards on three catches.
Brookwood was led by Dorian Miles' 95 receiving yards and the only touchdown for the Broncos, which came in the second quarter on a 59-yard pass from Tanner Winksie. That score pulled Brookwood to within 14-7.
Winksie finished 12 of 19 passing for 135 yards. Jesse Brown had 59 yards rushing on 16 carries.
With the win, the Hawks look to carry the momentum created last season, when they rode a five-game win streak into the playoffs. They'll look to make the state playoffs for the third season in a row under coach Shannon Jarvis, the program's only coach since it began in 2004.
Brookwood, on the other hand, is a team that appears to be trending in the other direction. The Broncos finished 2-8 last season, their worst record since 1996, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Saturday was the debut for Broncos coach Philip Jones, who takes over after 13 seasons with Mark Crews at the helm.
The Hawks take on West Forsyth at home next week; the Broncos host Norcross.
