We’ve arrived at the midseason mark for every team, so we’ll take a quick review of how the season has gone thus far. And of course, we’ll take a look at the updated Georgia High School Association/MaxPreps Power Ratings.

Midseason review

Review this list of accolades and chime in with any team(s) or individual(s) you believe should be included.

Best Team

Prince Avenue Christian.  In Year 3 of the Jeff Herron era, the Wolverines are rolling. PAC (6-0) is No. 2 in the AJC Top 10 and, more importantly, No. 1 in the Power Ratings.

Honorable Mention:  Mt. Paran Christian, Marion County, Turner County, Eagle's Landing Christian, Clinch County, Lincoln County, Charlton County, Trion, Landmark Christian

Most Disappointing Team

Dooly County.  Historically one of the state’s most consistent programs, Dooly is struggling at 2-3 for the first time since 2008 when the Bobcats finished 4-7. Defense has been a big problem in the three defeats. Dooly has surrendered an average of 43 points in those losses, including yielding 50 twice – to Turner County (50-6) and Marion County (50-12).

(Dis)Honorable Mention:  Mitchell County, Wilcox County, Telfair County, King's Ridge, Mount de Sales

Coach of the Year

Ben Simmons, Turner County.  The Florida native has the Rebels off to their best start (6-0) since 1976, when they finished 13-0 and won the state title.

Honorable Mention:  Jeff Herron, PAC; Kevin Banks, Lincoln County; Jim Dickerson, Clinch County; Mitch Jordan, Mt. Paran; Mike Swaney, Marion County

Player of the Year

Taylor Trammell, Sr., Mt. Paran.  For the season, Trammell has rushed for 1,110 yards on 119 carries (9.3 ypc), scored 17 touchdowns and intercepted two passes for the Eagles, who have won 19 consecutive games.

Best Player You Don’t Hear About

Jacob Cavendar, Sr., Mt. Vernon Presbyterian.  The Mustang’s quarterback is one of the leading passers in the state. He has thrown for 960 yards, 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions for the DeKalb County program that could be on the cusp of becoming competitive.

Honorable Mention: RB JJ George, Jr., Miller County; QB Gunnar Watson, So., Taylor County; Steve Dubose, Sr., Hebron Christian; RB Mykelle Kelley, Jr., Marion County; O'Showen Williams, Sr., Stratford Academy; RB/DB DeAndre Bowman, Sr., St. Anne-Pacelli; LB/TE Jarkevin Clark, Jr., Warren County
