A handful of meets this weekend will feature top competitors and teams getting tuned up for the barrage of region and area meets that will take place starting next week.
Spartan Classic
Where: Greater Atlanta Christian, Norcross
When: Friday
The skinny: For the boys, Brookwood and Mill Creek are the clear favorites. Watch Gainesville junior pole vaulter Hunter Mallard, Brookwood senior jumper Nate Blackmon, and Brookwood senior hurdler Myles Scott. On the girls’ side, Brookwood and GAC are the clear favorites. Winder-Barrow senior thrower Briana Sims, Brookwood senior hurdler Brianna Isles, distance specialists Brookwood junior Mackenzie Ellison and East Jackson sophomore Sue Ann Morales, and Brookwood junior sprinter Caitlan Tate are the ones to watch.
Beef-O-Brady’s Dragon Invitational
Where: Jefferson High School, Jefferson
When: Saturday
The skinny: Parkview and host Jefferson will rule the boys’ side. Mallard is expected to compete in the pole vault along with Elbert County senior jumper Mecole Hardman, distance specialists Jefferson junior Max Higgins and Parkview sophomore Christian Corsello are among the top individual competitors. For the girls, Parkview and Athens Academy will be at the top of the team standings. Keep an eye on Athens Academy junior thrower Julia Harisay and sophomore distance specialist Anna Marian Block, Tallulah Falls sophomore hurdler Anna Davis, and Parkview senior sprinter Nina Nkem.
Drew High School Tune Up Invitational
Where: Drew High School, Jonesboro
When: Saturday
The skinny: Whitewater, Arabia Mountain and Southwest DeKalb are the boys teams to watch. Southwest DeKalb junior sprinters Terry and Terryon Conwell, Sandy Creek junior hurdler Michael Jones, and Whitewater senior distance specialist Parker Nail are among the top individuals. For the girls, Mays and Arabia Mountain are the favorites. Arabia mountain senior thrower Jazmine Johnson, Mays junior hurdler/sprinter Kamaya Street, Southwest DeKalb senior distance specialist Ashley Middlebrooks and East Coweta senior sprinter Aliyah Whisby are ones to watch.
Eagle’s Landing Region Tune Up
Where: Eagle’s Landing High School, McDonough
When: Saturday
The skinny: Union Grove and host Eagle’s Landing will vie for the boys title. Union Grove senior hurdler/sprinter Matt Moore, Eagle’s Landing senior middle distance specialist Devin Dixon, and Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy junior sprinter Jeffrey Uzzell are ones to watch. For the girls, host Eagle’s Landing and Union Grove will be at the top of the team standings. ELCA junior sprinter/jumper T’aja Cameron, Union Grove senior thrower Megan Douglas, Redan senior hurdler Shequilla McClain, and Union Grove senior distance specialist Ellunde Montgomery are among the top individuals.
Marietta Last Chance Invitational
Where: Marietta High School, Marietta
When: Saturday
The skinny: Host Marietta and Campbell are the teams to watch. Central-Carrollton senior pole vaulter Mitt Conerly, and throwers Marietta senior Varian Martin (discus) and Campbell senior Isaiah Rogers (shot put) are ones to watch. For the girls, Campbell, Marietta, Walton and Marist are among the top teams. The Weber School junior pole vaulter Becky Arbiv, Walton freshman sprinter/hurdler Tia Jones, Milton senior distance specialist Riley Burr, and Marietta freshman sprinter Sterling Lester are ones to watch.
McEachern Invitational
Where: McEachern High School, Marietta
When: Saturday
The skinny: On the boys side, Archer, Westlake, Hillgrove and Roswell will battle for the team title. Keep an eye on Westlake hurdlers sophomore Rainey Anderson and senior Wesley Watkins, as well as Grayson senior sprinter Trevious Frazier and Archer sophomore distance specialist James Cragin. For the girls, McEachern, Westlake, Archer and Grayson are team title favorites. McEachern senior springer Makenzie Dunmore, Grayson senior distance specialist Yanely Gomez, Westlake sophomore hurdler/jumper Kennedy Simon and Grayson junior thrower Natasha Stamp are among the top competitors.
Robertson competing at FSU
Savannah Christian senior Demetris Robertson, the nation’s top undecided senior football recruit, will be on campus at Florida State, Saturday, but not for a football visit.
Robertson, the defending Class A champion in the long jump, 100 and 200 meters, will be competing in the annual Seminole Invitational against some of the top collegiate and former Olympic athletes. Robertson plans to announce college choice later this month. In alphabetical order, California, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Stanford and UGA are among his top finalists.
