Here are some games to watch involving Class AAAAAA teams:
-The best girls game this weekend that counts in region standings should be West Forsyth (14-3, 9-2) at North Forsyth (16-2, 10-1) in Region 6. North’s Caroline Bowns, a guard, has signed with Campbell. West’s Jenna Staiti, a 6-foot-5 post, is committed to Maryland. North is ranked No. 8. Both are chasing No. 3 South Forsyth.
-Wheeler’s boys, ranked in the top 10 of every national ranking, play Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland in the Spalding Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, Mass., on Monday at 11 a.m. O’Dowd is ranked No. 5 nationally by MaxPreps. O’Dowd forward Ivan Rabb, at 6-10, is rated the No. 1 prospect in California and No. 7 in the nation. Wheeler, of course, has prize prospect Jaylen Brown, but note that Shembari Phillips scored 37 points in a 100-65 victory over Etowah on Tuesday. He scored 25 in the first quarter.
-Pebblebrook’s boys, ranked No. 3, get their shot at nationally renowned Montverde Academy on Saturday. Montverde is ranked No. 2 nationally by Max Preps – its only loss is to Wheeler – and won national titles in 2013 and 2014. Montverde has a couple of Georgia players on the roster. Doral Moore, formerly of Luella and committed to Wake Forest, and Noah Dickerson, formerly of North Atlanta and committed to Florida, transferred this past off-season. Moore is 7-foot. Dickerson is 6-7. Pebblebrook has guard Ty Hudson (committed to Clemson) and Derek Ogbeide (Georgia).
-Tucker lost Shembari Phillips to Wheeler (transfer), but is rolling along with an 18-2 overall and 4-0 region record. The Tigers will play Rockdale County (13-5, 4-1) in a Region 2-AAAAAA game on Friday. Tucker won 72-54 on Dec. 9. This one at Rockdale County. Rockdale County’s Connor Ferrell averages 16.4 points. Jalen Jordan averages 16.8 points. Tucker’s Bryce Brown is averaging more than 20 points per game and is one of the state’s best 3-point shooters.
