Lacrosse: Westminster Wildcats, Lady Wildcats dominate standings, competition

Here are some highlights from top teams and performers in GHSA lacrosse:

• The Westminster Wildcats - ranked No. 1 in AAAAA-A - are off to a 6-2 start (2-0 in Region 2-AAAAA-A) after two impressive wins in Chapel Hill at the King of Spring Tournament, where they defeated McCallie 6-3 and Charlotte Catholic 10-5. The Wildcats are led by midfielder Cole Haverty's 14 goals. Haverty also has 3 assists. Attacker Blake Davis has 11 goals and 2 assists, attacker Trip Wray has 13 goals and 3 assists and midfielder Read Ziegler has 7 goals and 3 assists. Defenseman Charlie Trense and goalie William Hudson lead what is arguably the best defense in the state, with Trense being an owner of a 73-percent face-off percentage including 21 ground balls. Williams Hudson has a 71-percent save average, allowing just 4.1 goals per game.

• The Wesleyan Wolves are off to a fast start at 7-1 and 3-0 in 3 AAAAA-A after wins this week over Forsyth Central (16-2) and Collins Hill (7-6). Matt Zimmerman had 10 goals on the week to give him 34 overall, and Aaron Smay had 26 saves on the week.

• The Westminster Lady Wildcats, like the Wildcats, are also ranked No. 1 in AAAAA-A. Against Creekview, Maggie Borders had 4 goals and Caroline Midis, Julia Grady and Chandler McCamey notched hat tricks as the Lady Wildcats rolled to a 20-1 victory. The Lady Wildcats are 4-0, with all wins coming over Region 2-AAAAA-A opponents, whom they've outscored a combined 83-8.

• The Milton Lady Eagles are the top ranked team in AAAAAA and off to a 3-0 start. In a 19-4 win over Roswell, they won 19-4 after leading 14-0 at halftime. Twelve players scored in the game, led by senior attacker Brooke Winsness' 3 goals. She also had 2 assists, 2 ground balls and 1 forced turnover. Junnior defensemen Lindsey Burton had four ground balls and three forced turnovers. Hannah Davis had 1 goal, 6 draw controls and 4 ground balls.

The Westminster Schools will host the 14th annual Dogwood High School Girls Lacrosse Classic this weekend on Mar. 14 and 15. The tournament provides a rare in-season opportunity to watch some of the top players and programs from around the Southeast at one event. The eight-team field features teams from Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Included in this year’s field are the following schools:

Alpharetta High School (GA)

Centennial High School (GA)

The Lovett School (GA)

The Westminster Schools (GA)

Harpeth Hall School (TN) – Multi-year state finalist from Tennessee

Lamar High School (TX) – No. 2 ranked school from Texas in 2013

Mountain Brook High School (AL) – Defending Alabama state champ

St. Anne’s-Belfield (VA) – Traditional powerhouse from just outside of Charlottesville, Va.

Admission to all games is free of charge. First round games will take place in two locations – Westminster and Lovett and will begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, all games will take place at Westminster, beginning at 9 a.m. The finals are set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
