Lacrosse: Lambert the last of the unbeatens in AAAAAA
After Wednesday's 12-10 win for No. 5 Pope over top-ranked John's Creek, unbeaten Lambert is poised to assume the top spot in the Class AAAAAA boys rankings. But before that happens, the Longhorns will have to survive Saturday's date with No. 4 Roswell, and if early-season trends are any indication, anything could happen.
No. 2 Lambert is the last remaining unbeaten team in Class AAAAAA, and there appears to be very little separation among the top teams. Consider: Pope's only loss this season came at the hands of Roswell, 16-8. Roswell's only loss came against John's Creek, 16-5. And John's Creek just lost to Pope when the Greyhounds closed the game with four unanswered goals.
That kind of parity should make it clear -- if the presence of eight one-loss teams in the top 10 didn't -- that Class AAAAAA is wide open this year. The next few days could provide more clarity, as No. 3 Centennial takes on Lovett, the top ranked team in Class A-AAAAA, and No. 6 Lassiter takes on No. 7 Northview on Saturday.
Showdowns loom in Class A-AAAAA
On the topic of parity, Class A-AAAAA girls, where five of the top six teams are undefeated, seem to have it in abundance. That will change to some degree Friday when No. 2 Blessed Trinity hosts No. 1 Cambridge, and No. 6 Lakeside-Evans hosts No. 5 St. Pius.
And let's not forget the defending state champion, third-ranked Kell. The Lady Longhorns' only loss came in their season opener to Walton (No. 4 Class AAAAAA), and they'll be taking on unbeaten Lassiter (No. 3, Class AAAAAA) on Wednesday.
