Alexander High School in Douglasville is enjoying a banner athletic school year. The Cougars' football team reached the playoffs for the time in school history and then made a run to the quarterfinals. Now, the Alexander boys basketball team, which reached the Elite 8 last season, has surged to No. 3 in the latest AAAA rankings. The Cougars have won 12 in a row are undefeated in arguably the toughest AAAA region and will be going for a sweep of No. 10 Sandy Creek on Friday. Alexander won a triple-overtime thriller at Sandy Creek in the first meeting.

Congrats: The Albany girls picked up their first win of the season, 39-30, over Worth County on Tuesday, ending the Indians' 18-game losing streak.

Unbeatens: Defending boys champion Eagle's Landing is one of five AAAA teams that are undefeated in region play. Glenn Hills (3-AAAA), Alexander (5-AAAA), River Ridge (7-AAAA) and Eastside (8-AAAA) also are unbeaten in region play, according to standings posted on the GHSA website.

No. 2 Eagle’s Landing (15-4, 11-0 Region 4-AAAA) has won seven in a row, heading into tonight’s game at Stockbridge.

Big performance: Chestatee's Bridgette Kelly poured in 34 points to lead the War Eagles to a 61-60 overtime win at Gilmer last Saturday. Chestatee was 5-0 and in first place in Region 8-AAAA, heading into Thursday's region game against Johnson.

Football Notes

--Region 1-AAAA football coaches voted to split into sub-regions for the 2014-15 season.  Sub-region A will consist of Crisp County, Thomas County-Central, Cairo, Monroe and Alabama. Sub-region B will consist of Bainbridge, Americus-Sumter, Westover, Worth County and Dougherty.

--State power Buford, which joins AAAA in 2014, is finalizing its football schedule and expects to release it in the coming weeks. Buford will play in Region 8-AAAA next season.
