Medalist Nic Cassidy led the Johns Creek boys to victory at the Michael Diem Memorial Tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Dawsonville.

The tournament used a point system rather than strokes and Cassidy had 46 points. Thomas Gerard, Andy Mao and Calum Ross each scored 41 points. The Gladiators totaled 169 points and broke the old tournament record by five points.  Johns Creek won by 24 points.

Mao scored a hole-in-one at a recent dual meet against Milton at the Country Club of the South.

Dunwoody favored in DeKalb Tournament

The Dunwoody boys and girls are favored to repeat at the DeKalb County Championships on April 12 at the Sugar Creek Golf Club.

The Wildcats won the boys title by 62 shots a year ago and return junior Davis Brainerd, who was third at the county meet, and  seniorTim Trembath, who was sixth at the county tournament. Sophomore Will Benston is another key piece.

Cedar Grove’s Noah Karanga, who transferred from Arabia Mountain, was second in the county last year, losing in the second hole of a playoff. M.L. King’s Kameron Wyatt and Lakeside’s Tony Bryant are also expected to contend for medalist honors.

The Dunwoody girls are led by juniors Lauren Callahan and Olivia Vergua. But the favorite among the individuals is Mariah Kuranga, a senior, who was medalist at the DeKalb Championships last year.

Region tennis tournaments begin next week

The GHSA gives each region or area the freedom to choose their representatives for the state playoffs, but the top four representatives must be determined no later than April 16. (Class A teams must be decided by April 21.)

That means most regions will have their playoffs this week. It’s all the first step toward the state championship on May 9 at the International Park Tennis Center in Jonesboro.
