Here’s a look back at some of the top stories from the week in girls soccer:
*Tournament champions again: First Presbyterian scored an own goal with two seconds left in the first overtime and held on for a 2-1 victory over Veterans to claim its sixth consecutive Viking Cup championship last weekend. Amy Morgan scored the Vikings' first goal and finished the three-game tournament with five. Sara Lucas' goal for Veterans is the only one allowed this season by First Presbyterian, which has outscored its opponents 36-1 through a 6-0 start. First Presbyterian, ranked No. 1 in Class A by Eurosport, has not lost a home match since 2008, when it was a member of the Georgia Independent School Association. Veterans is 8-1 and ranked No. 3 in Class AAAA.
*On the defensive: Harrison got two goals each from Lizzy Sieracki, Carly Rich and Treva Aycock in a surprisingly easy 6-0 victory against Allatoona on Thursday. It was the third consecutive shutout and fifth this season for Harrison, which is led in goal by senior Allison Leone (signed with Western Kentucky) and junior Kelsey Daugherty (committed to Alabama-Birmingham). Harrison recorded 15 shutouts and allowed just eight goals last season, when it reached the Class AAAAAA championship game and lost to Parkview 2-1. The Hoyas are 8-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA. Allatoona is 6-2-1 and No. 8 in AAAAA.
*More hot starts: Five of the six defending state champions are ranked in the top five of their classifications after one month of the season. Parkview, the No. 1 team in Class AAAAAA, outscored its opponents 23-0 through a 6-0 start. Northgate is No. 3 in AAAAA and was 4-0 heading into the weekend. Marist, No. 1 in AAAA, has not allowed a goal in a 2-0-1 start. St. Pius is No. 2 in AAA and was 6-2 heading into the weekend. The Golden Lions outscored their past three opponents 31-0. Westminster is No. 5 in AA after a 1-2-2 start against teams from higher classifications. The only defending champion that is unranked by Eurosport is Class A Paideia, which opened the seasons with victories against Providence Christian (2-1) and Decatur (4-1) and losses to Hebron Christian (5-2) and Woodward Academy (5-2).
