The Georgia High School Association's executive committee unanimously approved a proposal Monday to allow executive director Gary Phillips to retire at the end of the current school year and pay his contract and benefits through the 2017-18 school year.
The original recommendation from the Board of Trustees, which would have had the same result, was unanimously rejected by the executive committee as a symbolic gesture.
Phillips then reiterated his desire to retire saying he needed to do “what was best for the association and my family.”
A new proposal from Christian Suttle of Hillgrove High School and Bruce Potts of Sonoraville High School was then introduced and passed.
The GHSA Board of Trustees will likely meet within the next two weeks to discuss the next steps.
