Class AAAA No. 1 Buford won its 28th consecutive game by knocking McEachern of AAAAAA. The Wolves' David Curry batted down a pass in the end zone in the final seconds to help Buford prevail over its second straight opponent from the state's largest classification.
Buford QB Luke Humphrey left Friday's win over McEachern in the third quarter with what Director of Football Operations Justin Johnson described as severe cramping. Johnson said in an email that he expects Humphrey to be back when the Wolves open Region 8-AAAA play against White County in two weeks. Buford is off this week.
Sophomore Mic Roof replaced Humphrey and led the Wolves' second-half comeback.
--Griffin quarterback Anforne Stroud completed 10 of 16 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns in the Bears’ 36-22 win over Burke County. Griffin running back Malik Miller rushed for 202 yards and two scores for the defending champs, who racked up 515 yards of offense and improved to 2-0 under new coach Jarrett Laws.
--Woodward Academy’ Elijah Holyfield and Mack Green each ran for two touchdowns in the War Eagles’ 42-21 win over St. Pius X. Holyfield, the son of boxing great Evander Holyfield, rushed for 156 yards on 19 carries. Woodward Academy (2-0) travels to Lovett on Friday.
--Marist fullback Ian Gipson rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, leading the War Eagles to a 27-7 win over Lovett. Marist opens Region 6-AAAA play against Arabia Mountain on Friday.
--The difficult start for coach Ed Dudley’s tenure at Carrollton continued with a 34-6 loss at Calhoun. The Trojans managed only 129 yards of offense and fell to 0-3 for the first time since 1977.
