GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Heath Webb, Winder-Barrow
1. What is the real difference-maker in winning and losing in Georgia high school football? "A culture of love. A coaching staff that genuinely loves the players turns into players loving each other, and they will run through walls for each other. Once that happens, winning takes care of itself. ... I don't know if that's the right answer for every team, but it's that culture that has changed Winder-Barrow football. It works for us."
2. Which player that you've coached is memorable mostly for his character or inspiration? "Chris Conley (North Paulding, UGA, KC Chiefs). Chris is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of player for a coach. Not only was he our best player, but he was also our best student. He was our best leader both vocally and by example. He was our spiritual leader. He was our hardest worker. He was our most competitive player. He had never played the sport before high school and simply decided to be great and would not be outworked. He is just the total package. Never before and never since have I had one player embody all those things. At the time, I was proud to call him my player. Now, I'm proud to call him my friend."
3. What is the best atmosphere for a high school game that you've experienced away from home? "City Park in Gainesville is the first thing that pops into my mind. The setting is beautiful, the turf is perfect, the stadium is packed, and you know you're going to be in a dogfight when you play them."
4. As a player or coach at any level, which game do you wish you could play again? "In 2015, we lost in Round 1 to eventual state champ Allatoona badly. They were better than us, but not 52-3 better than us. I want that whole day over. We planned poorly, traveled poorly, schemed poorly - the whole 9 yards. I would like to see us at our best against that team."
