GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Bob Sphire, North Gwinnett
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "For me personally, almost every game two years ago while my son, Hayden, was our quarterback was memorable. The entire playoff run of close wins versus Archer, Hillgrove and McEachern, all on the road that year, were cardiac games. During the regular season versus Mill Creek that year, while down 22 points with 6:30 to go in the game and Mill Creek with the ball, we somehow put together a string of big plays on offense, defense and special teams to come back and win. That game wasn't as big as the playoff game wins that got us to the championship game that season, but it was one where we continued to fight and battle and somehow find a way to win."
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "There are so many good coaches who I have competed against or coached with that it is hard to pick just one, but Mo Dixon at Walton has worked with me at three different schools and so I know first-hand he brings out the best in any young man who plays for him, and I trust him to expect excellence and to expect the right commitment to doing the job the way it is supposed to be done. Plus, he is such a team guy, and not in the business of promoting the individual over the team, which can be a lost art in today's time."
3. What is your favorite saying/motto? "Stay Loose ... Go Reckless ... Score Now."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "I think the clock should stop the last few minutes of play after any illegal procedure, etc., penalty on the offense because I see too many times in a close game with the offense in the lead penalties like that occur, and then they do a restart of the 25-second clock after the penalty is marked off, thus the offensive team with a small lead can run off 50 seconds instead of just 25 seconds by committing a foul. That needs to be fixed."
