GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
John Bowen, Cross Keys
*1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "2010 vs. Richmond Academy and coach Chris Hughes. We were playing in week 10 for a spot in the AAAA state playoffs. We were written off after a 1-5 start but had gotten to 4-5. The weather created more of the memory than the result as ARC beat us and kept us from back-to-back-to-back state playoff appearances. As we warmed up, it was a comfortable evening, probably around 50-55 degrees. After warm-ups, a cold front came in while the teams were inside for final instructions before the coin toss. When we came back out after just 15-20 minutes inside, the wind chill had to have dropped into the low 30s, if not lower. Coach Hughes and I still laugh about that game when the weather cools down." [Bowen was in his sixth season as head coach at Hephzibah in 2010, when Richmond Academy beat the Rebels 35-6 in the final game of the regular season. Bowen remained at Hephzibah until taking the Cross Keys job this season.]
*2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "Coach Joel Ingram from Washington County. A class act that teaches character and class in addition to great football."
*3. What is your pet peeve as a coach? "Teams 'blacking it out' without black as one of their two or three primary colors."
*4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "I would cancel the scrimmages and allow for two intersquad practices between schools like the NFL and GISA allow."
