East Paulding has hired Billy Shackelford of Sprayberry as its next head football coach.

Shackelford’s record in 10 seasons at Sprayberry, his alma mater, was 51-53, including 6-4 in 2016. Sprayberry had won only 25 games in the previous 10 years under five head coaches.

East Paulding has been up and down in the five seasons since current Rome coach John Reid left. The Raiders averaged 10 wins under Reid (2006-11) but has finished 4-6 two of the past three seasons, most recently under Jon Lindsey.

Shackelford announced his move on Wednesday morning through an e-mail to friends and media.

''Lately, I’ve reflected on my time here and believe that I’ve accomplished what I set out to do here at Sprayberry,'' he said. "I believe that I am ready for a new challenge and new set of obstacles to tackle.  I also believe that new leadership would be good for the program and community I dearly love.''
