We are three weeks into the football season for many Class AAA teams, and what have we learned about the projected top five teams in the classification?
Very little.
Pace Academy, ranked No. 1, and Greater Atlanta Christian, ranked No. 2, have remained undefeated. Pace coach Chris Slade said before the season that he felt like his team was over-ranked and that he wouldn’t learn about his team until it began playing against tough Region 5 competition. But Pace moved to 2-0 Friday with a 21-7 victory against Hapeville Charter. The Knights also have an upper-class victory against Class AAAAAAA West Forsyth.
GAC is also unbeaten, with victories against No. 7 Lovett and No. 8 Westminster, but its offense still is trying to find its footing after losing Super 11 quarterback Davis Mills to a preseason knee injury.
The other top-five teams in AAA have played against solid teams in the higher classifications, and the results have been mixed.
Here’s a look:
-- Calhoun, ranked third, had a rough night against No. 1 ranked Cartersville of Class AAAA, losing 56-0. It was the first loss at home for Calhoun since 2008, a 66-game stretch. Cartersville put together 490 yards of total offense and held Calhoun to 75 yards of total offense, just 6 yards in the second half. The Yellow Jackets defeated AA Douglass 28-0 in Week 1, then lost to Class AAAAAA Dalton, 28-13, in Week 2.
-- No. 4 Cedar Grove, ranked fourth, defeated Class AAAAAA Stephenson 34-23 in Week 1, then lost to Class AAAAA Southwest DeKalb 21-20 in Week 2. The Saints were off this week and face Columbia on Friday.
-- No. 5 Peach County, which played has played up in class in both of its games, survived a Warner Robins (AAAAA) comeback to win 20-19 Friday after the Demons missed an extra-point that would have tied the game. The Trojans lost to Class AAAAAA No. 1-ranked Houston County last week.
