Daily Trivia: Success began early for some young Gwinnett schools

Discovery opens this month as the 19th football-playing public high school in Gwinnett County. The school's nickname is the Titans, and the colors are navy, silver and lime green. Discovery will be the seventh Gwinnett high school to begin varsity football since 2000. Of the previous six, which ones won region or state titles within five years of opening their doors? Answer to Tuesday's question: Luther Welsh of Thomson and Selby Buck of Lanier are head coaches who won state titles during separate tenures at their schools. Welsh's Thomson teams won state titles in 1984, 1985 and 2002. From 1991 to 1998, Welsh coached at Greene County, Camden County and Screven County. Buck's Lanier teams won state titles in 1931, 1936, 1947 and 1948. He served in the Army during World War II.
