Washington County (1-5) is having a rough go this season after a 14-1 Class AAA runner-up finish in 20014. That's the most severe six-game start for a defending state finalist since Early County started 1-5 in 1999. Early had been 13-2 the previous season in Class AA. Below are the 16 teams in state history (out of 318 possible) that have reached a state final and started the following season 1-5 or 0-6. Not included is the notable 1-4-1 start by 1963 Valdosta, which might be the most surprising sudden decline in state history. Valdosta had won state titles in 1960, 1961 and 1962 - setting a record with a 36-game winning streak - and then began 1-4-1 in 1963 and finished 2-7-1. Two seasons later, Valdosta was state champion again.
