Tom Thomas kicked a 20-yard field goal with 14 seconds left to help Cook beat No. 10 Dodge County 13-10 and win the Region 1-AAA Division A on Friday.
It was the second field goal of the night for Thomas, who kicked a 25-yarder in the first half to match the 29-yarder by Dodge County's Mitch Tanner.
Dodge (7-1) took a 10-3 halftime lead on the strength of a 21-yard run by Roscoe Wilcox. But Cook (6-2) evened the score on Corey McCall's 30-yard touchdown run.
Dodge got in position to kick the winning field goal when Connor Hilliard completed a 40-yard pass to Jeremiah Smith to the Dodge 8.
The Cook offense totalled 249 yards, with Jay Smith carrying 18 times for 109 yards. Hilliard completed 3 of 4 passes for 46 yards.
Dodge had 163 yards. The Indians were led by quarterback Landon Martin, who completed 5 of 7 for 35 yards and ran nine times for 66 yards.
The Dodge defense was led by Kyle Glover with 14 tackles. Cook's Demartel Turner had seven tackles, two for loss.
Dodge is guaranteed a first-round playoff game at home. Dodge finishes the season next week at Pierce County and could sew up second place with a victory.
Westside, Peach set up Region 2 showdown
No. 8 Westside Macon set up a showdown with No. 5 Peach County by beating Spencer 44-20 on Thursday. Quarterback Marcell Williams completed 10 of 16 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Steve Dolphus caught five passed for 104 yards. Donta Pate ran 12 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns for the Seminoles (8-0).
Peach County quarterback Robert Allen completed 12 of 16 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown in the Trojans’ 31-7 win over Jordan. Keyshawn Lowe rushed for 75 yards as Peach substituted liberally after racing to a 28-0 lead.
Hart County hands Oconee first loss
Quarterback Cameron Fouch threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 9 Hart County (8-0) to a 49-21 win over Oconee County. The previously unbeaten Warriors made five turnovers to help the Hart County effort.
Central’s Terrell goes for 275 yards, four TDs
Kyle Terrell carried 13 times for 275 yards and scored four touchdowns as No. 8 Central Carroll (8-0) rolled to a 42-14 win over Cedartown. Jayleen Terry also ran for 84 yards and quarterback Wesley Long completed 3 of 5 passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns.
Washington County tops 70 again
No. 1-ranked Washington County scored a 73-6 win over Josey, the second time this year the Golden Hawks have topped the 70-point mark. Washington County is averaging 51.6 points and could become the sixth team in Georgia history to average 50 or more points. The 1972 Southeast Bulloch team holds the record with an average of 51. The last team to average 50 was Monroe Area in 2013, which averaged 50.2.
East Hall’s Watson has hand in five TDs
East Hall quarterback Devin Watson was involved in every score in the Vikings’ 34-7 win over Franklin County. Watson ran for 188 yards and four touchdowns and completed 11 of 14 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. He also intercepted a pass.
The win evened East Hall’s record at 4-4 and kept the Vikes very much alive for the Region 7-AAA playoffs.
Five TDs for West Hall’s Williams
Kwon Williams scored five times as Region 7-AAA leader West Hall (7-1) blanked Fannin County 49-0. Williams ran for 195 yards and scored on runs of 56, 6, 12 and 95 yards. He also scored on an 85-yard kickoff return. It was West Hall’s fourth shutout of the season.
