The Columbus golf team, traditionally one of the best in the state, is rounding into championship form again. The Blue Devils have captured a pair of tournament recently and take a full head of steam into the postseason.
Defending Class AAAAA champion Columbus recently won the Muscogee County Invitational and the prestigious Hardaway Larry Gaither Invitational.
At the Muscogee County Invitational at Maple Ridge, Columbus shot a 292 and beat Brookstone by three shots. Daniel Davis and Nolan Miller shot 71s for the Blue Devils. Ben Carr shot 74 and ben Womack and Jonathan Parker each had 76.
Brookstone got a 71 from Walker Hinds and a 74 from Charles Waldrep. Evan Copeland and William Reaves each shot 75.
Connor Newton of Auburn, Ala., shot 68 to finish as medalist, beating Connery Meyer of Walker by one shot. Davis was the low Georgian.
At the Hardaway Invitational, Columbus shot a 569 over two rounds and beat North Oconee and Marist by 36 shots. Woodward Academy was fourth at 607.
Miller was medalist with rounds of 69-72, with Carr the runner up with rounds of 72-70.
“After posting a pretty impressive resume last year and everybody back and getting a little better, we have some pretty high expectations,” Columbus coach Chris Parker told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. “Based on what we’ve been shooting in practice, we know we’re capable of meeting those high expectations.”
Columbus has won 11 state golf championships.
Woodward boys wins Lion Invitational
Woodward Academy won the 13th annual Lions Invitational at Oak Mountain in Carrollton. The War Eagles shot a 306 and beat two-time defending champion Lovett by 10 shots.
The medalist was Rome’s Justin Kim, who shot 69 and won a playoff.

Woodward girls second at Maple Ridge
The Woodward girls were second in the 14-team Maple Ridge Junior Girls Classic in Columbus. The War Eagles shot 231 and finished four strokes behind Auburn, Ala.
Woodward got a 69 from Ayanna Habeel, who topped Marist’s Woo Wade and Auburn’s Elizabeth Preus for medalist.
The War Eagles also counted a 79 from Teagan Fritts and 83 from Susannah Cole and Amelia Connor.
