Only four of 48 high schools in the highest classification are from South Georgia nowadays. But half of them will be in the elite eight of the Class AAAAAAA football playoffs next week.
Colquitt County and Lowndes from Region 1 advanced with big offensive displays Friday night in the second round.
Colquitt defeated Brookwood 66-35, about as expected. Colquitt had beaten Brookwood 52-14 in September to trigger an eight-game winning streak after an 0-4 start. Colquitt County is the two-time defending champion.
Lowndes’ 57-21 road victory over fifth-ranked and previously unbeaten Norcross was more surprising. Lowndes had over 700 yards of total offense and now has scored 149 points in two playoff games. The Vikings beat Hillgrove 92-61 in the first round.
The rest of the second round went about as predicted. No. 2 Roswell (12-0) beat Woodstock 29-12 and will face No. 8 North Cobb (10-2), a 35-7 winner over Region 5 champ Lambert.
No. 7 Lowndes will play at unranked Region 2 champion Westlake (9-3), a 41-7 winner over South Gwinnett. Westlake has won eight straight games.
No. 6 Colquitt (8-4) will play No. 1 Grayson (11-1), a 59-21 winner over Woodstock. Colquitt’s state-record streak of seven straight semifinals in the highest class is in jeopardy there.
No. 3 Mill Creek (12-0) will play No. 4 McEachern (11-1) in the fourth quarterfinal. Mill Creek beat Cherokee 56-21. McEachern beat No. 10 Parkview 47-29.
