Three metro Atlanta football teams will play in Ireland on Sept. 2 next year, the day before Georgia Tech plays Boston College in Dublin in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
Buford, Marist and Blessed Trinity will participate in a pep rally and parade in Dublin and also educational tours during their stay to prepare for what event organizers are calling the ‘’Dublin Friday Night Lights’’ games.
“The trip to Ireland gives the boys a chance to play the game they love in front of a whole new audience,’’ Blessed Trinity coach Tim McFarlin said. ‘’The opportunity to be immersed in a different culture makes it all that much more special.’’
Also part of the event are St. Peter's Prep of New Jersey, Belen Jesuit of Florida and Prepa Tec of Mexico. Other teams are being courted.
Matchups have not been set officially, but McFarlin confirmed that Blessed Trinity expects to play St. Peters. Marist and Buford aren't sure of their opponents.
The games are sanctioned by the GHSA as regular-season contests.
