Athens Christian pulls the upset

The Eagles pulled off the stunner of the season thus far, upsetting No. 1 (Public) Commerce 21-14. The Tigers (3-1, 2-1 in Region 8) were held scoreless in the first half but tied the score at 14 with two, third-quarter touchdowns – a 2-yard touchdown run by QB Lane Sorrow and a 64-yard pass from Sorrow to Caleb Mason, according to the Athens Banner Herald. But Athens Christian (2-2, 2-1) scored his third short touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run with two minutes left, to give the Eagles a lead they would not give back. Things don't get any easier for Commerce, which travels to Bogart next week to take on undefeated Prince Avenue Christian (5-0, 4-0).

Defense leads Stratford

The No. 7 (Private) Eagles scored 35 points, but it was the defense that led the way in the 35-19 win over No. 6 (Public) Lincoln County. Stratford Academy (3-1) held the Red Devils (2-1-1) to minus-19 yards rushing with LB Jourdain Irvin doing most of the damage. The senior, who moved to defensive end for the game, had a fumble recovery, an interception and three sacks while RB Ames Jamison scored two touchdowns, and Jake Jamison made two 35-yard field goals. Lincoln County’s passing game was very effective as QB Javon Reid completed 15-of-34 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns. But the Red Devils shot themselves in the foot with three turnovers.

Darlington wins early region showdown

The No. 6 (Private) Tigers struck a blow for the private schools with a 28-7 win over No. 8 (Public) Bowdon. Darlington (4-1, 2-0 in Region 6, Div. A) built a 28-0 lead before a 3-yard touchdown run by QB Carson Parmer gave Bowdon (3-2, 1-1) its only points of the game. Darlington’s defense held the Red Devils to just 151 yards of total offense.
