Ole Miss center Demarco Cox will transfer to Georgia Tech following his graduation from his school this summer. Upon graduation, Cox will be immediately eligible and have one year remaining.

Cox will help fill in the void left by forward Robert Carter, who will transfer after two seasons at Tech. Cox was sold on Tech and coach Brian Gregory after a visit to campus this weekend. He informed Gregory and assistant coach Chad Dollar of his decision Saturday afternoon.

“They were excited,” Cox said. “I was excited, too. I wanted to get it out of the way.”

Cox listed Tech’s style of play and the chance to play in the ACC as factors in his decision. Marquette was his other choice. Cox averaged 16.6 minutes per game this past season, averaging 4.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 54.3 percent from the field. He called his decision to transfer a “mutual decision” between him and coach Andy Kennedy.

Cox is 6-foot-8 and 276 pounds, though he said he wants to play lighter this season. Cox said coaches told him their envisioned role for him is “to come in and hold down the paint.” Tech coaches are entirely familiar with him, as he scored a career-high 15 point and with 14 rebounds when the two teams played each other in the Barclays Classic last November in an Ole Miss win.

He is the second player to transfer in to Tech this offseason, following South Florida guard Josh Heath. He is also expected to have immediate eligibility, as Heath's father Stan was the USF coach and was fired at the end of the season. There is a precedent for players in such situations to receiver waivers from the NCAA.
