Not a bad season for former Georgia Tech star Iman Shumpert. In December, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard became a father in –he delivered the baby in his bathroom, in fact – and then helped his team win the NBA championship. On Father’s Day.
"Say what you want," Shumpert wrote on his Instagram account early Monday morning. "Just make sure to add that I'm a champ. Don't know how I could top my First Father's Day!"
Shumpert didn’t show up much in the box score in the finals – he scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds while averaging 18.4 points per game – but he contributed a four-point play in Game 7. More critically, he took turns guarding league MVP Stephen Curry, who was limited to 4-for-14 shooting from 3-point range in Game 7. Shumpert, in fact, defended Curry on the Warriors’ final possession of the game and challenged Curry’s errant 3-point try with seconds remaining.
In December, a month after getting engaged, Shumpert delivered his and fiancee Teyana Taylor's baby in their bathroom before paramedics could arrive. He called the delivery of daughter Junie "the best assist I've ever recorded in my life."
Shumpert has completed his sixth season in the NBA after getting drafted in the first round by the Knicks in 2011. He’s the third former Tech player to win an NBA title following John Salley (Detroit, 1989, 1990,Chicago, 1996, Los Angeles Lakers, 2000) and Chris Bosh (Miami, 2012, 2013).
