FLOWERY BRANCH – Clemson defensive tackle Grady Jarrett had a bittersweet draft day. He was selected a day after the family's home burned to the ground in Conyers.

About 30 to 40 people were gathered for a draft party, but they were able to escape.

"It was just a really unfortunate situation," Jarrett said. "We haven’t had the investigation done yet, so we don’t know exactly what started it."

They were gathered at the house on Bonds Lake Road in Conyers. The fire started in the second round of the draft between the 42nd and 43rd picks.

“We were just watching the draft and smelt something a little funny and went to the kitchen and nothing was going on in there," Jarrett said. "Then some people came running down from upstairs. The fire had already started on the wall. It was too much for water to put out or a fire extinguisher to put out. We couldn’t do (anything), but get everybody out of the house and pray for the best."

The fire department was arrived and were able to put the fire out.

"That section of the house is just really, really messed up," Jarrett said. "The key things loss was just a lot of my trophies and accolades and stuff like that. It can get replaced.

"The most important thing was getting everybody out. We have good insurance so we should be OK."

Jarrett, who's the son of former Falcons great Jessie Tuggle, was selected by the Falcons in the fifth-round (137th overall) of the NFL draft on Saturday.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank ordered the staff to take clothes and team clothes over to the Jarrett home after he was told about the fire, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Jarrett reportedly lost most of his Clemson memorabilia in the fire.
