Editor's note: Prior to the start of the new league year on March 10, AJC.Com is counting down the top unrestricted free agents the Atlanta Falcons must decide on this offseason. At the combine general manager Thomas Dimitroff stated that team meet with agents for linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, special teamer Eric Weems and nose tackle Corey Peters.
FLOWERY BRANCH – Free safety Dwight Lowery was signed to a veteran-minimum contract last season and wants to maximize his market value this time around.
He filled in at free safety after the Falcons released Thomas DeCoud. He was basically keeping the spot warm for third-round pick Dezmen Southward. However, Kemal Ishmael came on last season.
Ishmael and Southward have better range than Lowery at this point in his career.
When strong safety William Moore was injured, Lowery played some strong safety and dropped down to play some dime linebacker, too.
He was one of the top tacklers on a league’s worst defense.
Dwight Lowery, seven-year veteran
The skinny: Unrestricted free agent
The snaps: He played 1,050 snaps last season.
The stats: He had 60 tackles and two interceptions. He was Pro Football Focus' 43rd ranked safety among 88 qualifiers.
2014 salary: $760,000 base salary.
