We’ll focus on team-needs, possible selections, players the Falcons have worked out and/or interviewed, etc. With the Falcons owning 10 picks, we’ll start out by focusing on potential mid- and late-round picks and then move on to early-round picks. Today we’ll look at West Virginia running back Charles Sims.
Player: Charles Sims
Position: Running back
School: West Virginia
Height and weight: 6-0, 214
Combine numbers: 4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash; 17 reps on the 225-pound bench press; 37 1/2-inch vertical; 10-6 broad jump; 4.3 in the shuttle and 7.16 in the three-cone drill.
Projected Round: He’s the 10th rated running back in the draft and projected to be selected in the fourth by NFLDraftScout.com.
Career Highlights: Started his career at Houston before transferring in July of 2013. He led West Virginia with 1,095 rushing yards and led Big 12 with 1,496 yards from scrimmage. He had 70 catches out of the backfield as a freshman and average more than 10 yards per reception over his career. Sims was eligible to play immediately at West Virginia because he graduated with a degree in Health Education from Houston in May 2013. He earned first-team All-Big 12 honors from the coaches and was named the Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year by the Associated Press.
Falcons level on interest: The Falcons know that Steven Jackson is past 30 and need to get his heir-apparent on the roster as quickly as possible. Sims is a strong and powerful runner with good hands out of the backfield. He appears to be a perfect scheme-fit for the Falcons. Scouts have told them that he’ll need to improve his blocking to enhance his chances of becoming a three-down back.
