FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons wore pads for the second straight day on Monday.

“Big short-yard emphasis for us today,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. “That was kind of one of the areas that we wanted to hit on hard because it’s such a big one.”

It wasn’t a very tidy practice.

“(There were) a lot of penalties and a lot of things to clean up,” Quinn said. “But I loved the competition. We tried to feature that as much as we could today. We had one-on-ones all across the board at each position.”

Here are five plays that stood out in the nearly two hours of practice.

  1. --Rookie defensive end/linebacker Vic Beasley flashed his speed on one rush around right tackle Tyler Polumbus and put a nice move on the veteran.
  2. --Later, Beasley zoomed into the backfield, but running back Terron Ward picked him up and dropped Beasley with a good block. Beasley, after a few seconds, shook off the nice block.
  3. --Backup quarterback Sean Renfree tossed a nice bomb to Justin Hardy, who couldn't haul down the touchdown pass.
  4. --Cornerback Jonathon Mincey stepped in front of a T.J. Yates pass for an interception.
  5. --Free safety Ricardo Allen was in one-on-one coverage against tight end Jacob Tamme, who ran outside and then cut back inside. Allen slipped and Tamme made the easy catch.

The Falcons have Tuesday off as a recovery day before returning for practice on Wednesday and Thursday before their Friday Night Lights controlled scrimmage at Buford High School on Friday.
