Rain chances will be limited again Tuesday for what could be the last mostly dry day this week.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast Wednesday and stick around through the weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. For Tuesday, rain is just 20% likely even as humidity remains high.
“The humidity we can deal with,” Monahan said. “The rain, we’re not going to have to deal with today. It’s going to be actually a pretty quiet day today across North Georgia. Get yourself ready for a summer afternoon.”
Monahan is expecting Tuesday to be sunny for the mountains, but clouds will stick around metro Atlanta and neighborhoods to the south. There could be less in the way of blue sky to enjoy, but there will also be some below-average temperatures. Atlanta’s projected high Tuesday is 86 degrees, according to Channel 2.
The city is off to a muggy and warm start with morning lows in the 70s. Those one the Southside might want to grab an umbrella on their way out the door.
“South of I-20 is where we will see the best chance of an isolated shower or storm, but for the most part, today will be pretty dry across North Georgia,” Monahan said .”That will change tomorrow. Tomorrow we do have a risk of some strong and severe storms.
The National Weather Service has issued a Level 1 severe weather threat for most of North Georgia, which is the lowest risk level out of five. Monahan said heavy rain will be likely with Wednesday’s storms, and damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning are possible.
He expects Wednesday to start dry before the storms begin developing around lunchtime as a cold front moves in. Rain is 60% likely, according to the latest forecast, and activity should start to settle down into the early part of the evening.
“For your Wednesday, a better chance of rain, and we’ll keep those chances of rain in the forecast for Thursday and Friday as well,” Monahan said. “Scattered showers and storms continue Thursday, Friday, into your weekend. Not a washout, but we will have some cooler temperatures around, at least cooler than average, with the rain chances.”
He expects highs to stay in the 80s through Sunday as rainfall totals rise. By the end of the weekend, Monahan said areas of North Georgia will have accumulated a half-inch to 1.5 inches of rain.
