Scattered storms are in the forecast each day this week as the school year kicks off for more metro Atlanta students.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan advises packing an umbrella in the backpack Monday with a 40% chance of an afternoon shower or storm. That pattern will hold until Friday, when rain chances start to come down ahead of a drier weekend, he said.

Until then, afternoons could get wet at times.

“We are going to see some storms this afternoon,” Monahan said Monday morning. “Not right now, though. Nice and dry for your ride into work. For the bus stop, there could be a little patchy fog but that should be our only weather issue this morning.”

Monahan said Monday, and every other day this week, will follow a familiar summertime pattern of building heat and the chance for storm development after lunchtime. The storms could be slow-moving and come with frequent lightning, he said.

“That will slow us down in a few spots by the afternoon and evening commute,” he said. “Before that, heat builds. Eighty-eight Gainesville, 89 Athens (and) 90 is this afternoon’s high in Atlanta.”

Atlanta's projected high is 90 degrees Monday, and storms are 40% likely this afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

The rain activity should wind down overnight before another dry start followed by a wet afternoon on Tuesday.

“Scattered storms most of the week, but not all of the week,” Monahan said. “By Friday, we’re going to start to see our weather pattern change, and it’s going to set us up for a nice weekend next weekend. Saturday and Sunday should be mainly dry.”

With a 40% chance of an afternoon storm, Atlanta should reach a high of 90 degrees Monday.
