A driver fleeing from law enforcement on I-20 in Atlanta caused major backups during Wednesday’s evening commute after crashing into two vehicles and injuring six people, authorities said.

The wreck near the Downtown Connector was reported about 4 p.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

According to Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Franka Young, a trooper attempted to pull over a motorist who was driving a stolen silver Ford in the emergency lane of the interstate. The driver suddenly made a U-turn and fled in the opposite direction of westbound traffic, eventually striking two vehicles, Young said.

One vehicle flipped on its side. Two others appeared to be damaged in the front and side. Six people were taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Young said.

The driver who caused the crash ran away from the scene, Young said. He remains on the run.

Three of the four westbound lanes were closed until about 6 p.m., when the interstate fully reopened.
