The Atlanta Journal-Constitution announced today that Travis Lyles is joining its rapidly evolving newsroom as director of social media. In this role, Lyles will direct the AJC’s social media strategy and how its essential and engaging journalism reaches audiences across platforms.

Lyles spent eight years at The Washington Post, where he rose from social media editor to become the deputy director of social media, making him the youngest person ever to hold a senior editor title at The Post. In that role, he helped guide the strategy, daily operations and long-term vision for the newsroom.

During his time at The Post, Lyles founded and hired the newsroom’s dedicated Instagram team, transforming the platform from an emerging experiment into a core pillar of the organization’s digital presence. He led the creation of new visual and breaking news formats that became standard across the industry and developed coverage approaches that helped connect with younger, more diverse audiences. Under his leadership, The Post’s social team earned seven Webby Awards and became widely recognized as an industry leader in social journalism.

His work has earned recognition across the journalism industry, including being named to the 2023 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for media.

A native of Newport News, Virginia, Lyles is a 2015 graduate of Longwood University and a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
