Former Georgia Tech coach George O’Leary is about to become busier.
O’Leary on Tuesday added the title of interim AD to his job description, giving more responsibilities to the most successful football coach in school history.
He’ll begin on July 11.
“There are two important things you need to do in this job,” O’Leary said in a statement. “You have to win so that UCF has the opportunity to become a top national program. And you have to bring in good kids and, hopefully, help make them great young men and women when they graduate.”
O’Leary coached Georgia Tech from 1994, when he was the interim, through 2001, leading the Jackets to a 52-33 record and four consecutive bowl games.
He left to take the Notre Dame job, but resigned after inaccurate information was discovered on his resume.
O’Leary took over UCF in 2004 and has built it into a contending program, by finishing at least tied for first in its conference (Conference USA and American Athletic Conference) four of the past four years.
UCF is a combined 21-5 the past two years and O’Leary is 81-60 during his time there.
Georgia Tech and UCF are scheduled to play each in Orlando, Fla., on Sept. 16, 2017, and in Atlanta on Sept. 19, 2020.
“George’s leadership and knowledge of athletics – which includes programs beyond football – will keep UCF moving forward academically, competitively and in the community,” UCF President John C. Hitt said. “His national connections will also help us continue building the Knights’ reputation around the country.”
