Weekend Review: UGA-Tech crossover in recruiting?

Chad Clay, the 4-star defensive back from Peachtree Ridge High School, also has an offer from his father's alma mater, and ranks Tech as his No. 4 school.

“This is my son’s decision, and I will fully support it,” Willie told the AJC.

If the younger Clay selects UGA, then it won’t be the first time something like this has happened in recent months. Last February, receiver Jayson Stanley of Creekside signed with UGA (his father played fullback at Tech) and offensive lineman Will Bryan of Franklin County signed with Tech (his father played for UGA).

Here are the rest of the five stories that people are talking about from the weekend:

2. More good news for UGA: Most top recruits reveal a top 5 or top 10 in "no order of schools." But the state's top outside linebacker, Jaleel Laguins of Oconee County High school, posted his top six schools this weekend "in order" – and UGA held down the top spot. The Bulldogs were followed by Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, FSU and Florida. "Just being a hometown boy gets them the No. 1 spot," Laguins told the AJC. "It's not just Georgia, but also being from the Athens area. So it really meant a lot to get an offer from the University of Georgia. I think they are going to do something special in a couple of years, and I would love to bring that back to the Athens area and to the community." Laguins said he will likely hold off on committing until after his senior season.

3. Open commitment? Maybe it's just the way recruiting works these days, but it has got to drive college coaches bananas when a kid commits to their school – and then reels off a list of other places where he will be taking his official visits. Defensive tackle Tyler Clark of Americus-Sumter High School committed to UGA on Friday night, and then Clark proceeded to tell UGASports.come Jake Reuse that he's planning on taking official visits to Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, LSU, and Tennessee. Huh? That's five colleges, and each kid gets five official visits – and none of those five are UGA. Maybe Clark was simply caught up in the moment, and accidentally left out the school he just committed to. But maybe not? His mother described Clark's pledge as an "open commitment."

4. Jacob Eason update: He's the No. 1-rated overall recruit for 2016, and he's committed to UGA. The quarterback from Lake Stevens, Wash., went to the Nike Opening all-star camp in Oakland on Sunday, and he didn't win QB MVP honors. Nevertheless, Eason still performed well enough to earn an invite to the national camp at Nike headquarters in July. That's a pretty big deal for UGA's recruiting efforts because Eason will be able to mingle and recruit other elite prospects at the national camp. UGA is desperately seeking an elite running back and several top receivers in this class.

5. Grantham grinding: I saw a lot of college coaches at a lot of spring football practices in the Atlanta area the past couple of weeks. And one thing that caught my attention was former UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham whippng out his video camera at Cedar Grove High School. Most of the time, when you see scouts at practices, they are sometimes talking to the high school coaches — or most of the time "holding court" with other scouts. Not Grantham, who is now at Louisville. He broke away from the pack to stand close to the action and get close-ups with his fancy camera of Cedar Grove defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson and a couple of his heralded teammates. Now I don't know how good the quality of Grantham's video will be or even if he will look at it. But I do know that Jackson and the rest of the kids definitely noticed him shooting it. So if the goal was to get noticed — which it often is when you have a dozen other scouts at the same event — then that definitely was achieved.
