"Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney" is about as good as mashups get.
In the new game for the Nintendo 3DS, the two stars of their own regarded franchises come together to solve a supernatural mystery in the town of Labryinthia. It turns out, a young girl has been kidnapped by what appear to be witches and you play alternatingly as the super sleuth and attorney to help solve the mystery.
Fans of both series will be at home here. The Professor Layton sections are the same as they’ve always been – puzzles that require a strong sense of logic. And Phoenix Wright handles the court cases, with some “Clue” style fact-finding and tense courtroom drama.
The joint effort between Level 5 and Capcom is a good example of blending together two disparate franchises and creating something fresh and new. As the plot winds on, gamers who stick with it will be treated to an intriguing storyline, highlighted by exceptional animation and production values.
If you’re new to either series, this is a good jumping-off point. And if you’re not, there are plenty of nods to the past to reward your dedication.
While “Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney” could have been a disaster, the combination works well and leaves you wanting more.
