Creekside High linebacker Tyson Meiguez knew that Georgia Tech was the school for him when he talked about the school with others.
“It was last week,” said Meiguez, who announced his commitment to Tech on Tuesday with an elaborate video posted on Twitter, the ninth commitment for the 2020 class. “I was just talking to one of my teammates and we were talking about recruiting and when we came up on Georgia Tech, I really felt confident about Georgia Tech. I knew I was ready to commit because every time I talked about Georgia Tech, I got excited.”
Meiguez was recruited by the previous Yellow Jackets staff and said he wasn’t interested. That changed with the hire of coach Geoff Collins and his staff.
“It’s just the energy there,” Meiguez said. “As soon as you step on campus, you can feel a different energy. And once you get to practice and watch them coach, you can tell that everyone’s really getting after it.”
Meiguez has been a frequent visitor to campus; he estimated that he has made more than a half-dozen unofficial visits. What he experienced from the coaching staff helped sell him.
“They were just being themselves,” said Meiguez, who has received almost 40 scholarship offers, including Baylor, Mississippi State and Duke. “Sometimes when you go to a school, the coaches put on an act and they’re not like that. You go up there (to Tech) and they’re like that every single time you go up there.”
Meiguez is a three-star prospect, rated the No. 50 prospect in the state of Georgia and the No. 486 player nationally (247Sports Composite). He selected Tech over Kentucky and Tennessee.
“I feel like Georgia Tech was the best fit for me,” Meiguez said. “I feel like even if I wasn’t to play football, that would be a great place I could go. I felt like I was making the best business decision for me and my family.”
In his highlight video, he is a long-armed defender who gets off blocks well and hits hard. Meiguez, who is 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, said coaches see him as an inside linebacker. He has been recruited primarily by defensive line coach Larry Knight and defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker.
Collins has secured three commitments in the past four days, following Virginia linebacker Jared Behrens on Saturday and offensive tackle Cade Kootsouradis of Florida on Monday. Meiguez is the second linebacker in the class, joining Behrens.
Tech may not be finished at Creekside. Jackets coaches also have offered Seminoles cornerback Rashad Battle.
“I’m recruiting Rashad heavily right now,” Meiguez said.
