Even as some relief from wildfire smoke seemed near, the effects of the fires widened.
Smoky odor from the fires in North Georgia and elsewhere were reported in Savannah on Friday, with visibility also reduced to 10 miles, the Savannah Morning News reported.
The smoke was expected to clear Savannah for the weekend but could return if the fires continue, said Douglas Berry, a Charleston-based meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Savannah has had no rain since Hurricane Matthew pounded the coast in early October.
Metro Atlanta could also get a break Saturday from the wildfire-induced haze that moved in earlier this week.
The temperature was 55 degrees about 9:30 a.m., with winds to the east expected at 10 to 20 mph, according to The AJC weather page. That means the haze could be gone before the University of Georgia football game in Athens against Auburn kicks off at 3:30 p.m.
“It’s going to be a breezy and windy day,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
Rain? Well, there’s a chance of light sprinkles or showers Sunday, Monahan said.
