It will be warm enough in metro Atlanta on Thursday to flirt with, but not break the record high, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The record is 85 degrees, and the projected high is 82, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan reported. Thursday is the official first day of spring, but Monahan said it will feel more like a May afternoon than a mid-March one.
Today will be the day to enjoy some fresh air, according to Channel 2.
“Certainly compared to all the other days, it’s the best day of the week, and it’s going to get up to about 80 degrees later today,” Monahan said.
Spring officially arrives at 11:49 p.m. Thursday with the spring equinox. North Georgia spent its last morning of winter in the fog.

“There is some fog out there that will burn off about midmorning,” Monahan said. “By the afternoon, it’s a partly cloudy sky. It gets warm and breezy today.”
A breeze blowing from the south will help to scoop up the warm air and carry it across North Georgia, he said. The region started the day warm in the mid-50s and low 60s, but by lunchtime Atlanta should be in the upper 70s, according to Channel 2.
The city is expected to reach its high temperature by 4 p.m.
While there could be some mist and drizzle in the morning fog, Monahan said Thursday will be mainly dry. Friday will still be warm but not as dry, he said.
A 60% chance of rain is in the forecast.
“We've got a cold front that will be moving in Friday afternoon that will start to spread some showers across the North Georgia mountains — could be a thunderstorm, too,” Monahan said. “Then by Friday evening we have some showers pushing on down toward metro Atlanta.”
Friday’s projected high is 79 degrees, then it turns cooler for the weekend, according to Channel 2. Sunday afternoon should only see highs in the low 60s, and there is a predicted 60% chance of rain.
Visibility may be an issue Thursday morning, but there are no major issues on metro Atlanta interstates, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported at 10:15 a.m.
Conditions remain lighter than normal with less drivers out on the roads amid the coronavirus crisis.
