Light showers turned harsh Wednesday afternoon as parts of the metro area saw lightning and downed trees.

About 5 p.m., rains hit  parts of Cobb and Gwinnett counties before entering Fulton County, according to Channel 2 Action News.

A thunderstorm warning issued for Cobb, Paulding and parts of Fulton counties until 9:30 p.m. has expired, according to the National Weather Service.

Fans attending the Atlanta United game at Kennesaw State University were asked to seek shelter at the KSU Center on Busbee Drive until the storm passed. The game resumed play at 10:10 p.m.

A downed tree blocked Upper Bethany Road and Bethany Farms Drive and took down a power line in Cherokee County, officials said.

Traffic was diverted as crews worked to remove it.

Some parts of North Georgia saw showers, but few turned severe.

Expect fewer showers south of I-20.

“Once it stops raining,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said, “it’s going to feel really like a sauna.”

Humidity started at 94 percent in the morning and came down to 58 percent by the evening.

Currently, the temperature in Atlanta is 83 degrees. The average high for this time of year is 86, Channel 2 reported.
