Mostly wet weather on tap for busy weekend in Atlanta

The weekend should begin dry, but will likely end on a wet note, as forecasters are predicting a 100 percent chance of rain Saturday night and Sunday. The rain is expected to begin by late in the day on Saturday, and probably won't end until Tuesday.

Here’s what else you need to know on this event-packed weekend:

Basketball madness at the Dome: The SEC men's basketball tournament continues through Sunday at the Georgia Dome. Semifinal games are scheduled for 1 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday's championship game tips off at 3:15 p.m.

Professional basketball, too: The Hawks take on the Denver Nuggets at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Philips Arena.

Kiss me, I'm Irish: Atlanta's St. Patrick's Day Parade steps off at noon Saturday, with the parade route running south on Peachtree Street from 16th Street to Fifth Street. Other St. Patrick's Day events are scheduled this weekend at Meehan's Public House in Sandy Springs, Fado Irish Pub in Buckhead and at the Masquerade Music Park on North Avenue. The Governor's Office of Highway Safety suggests that revelers designate a sober driver ahead of time, use a taxi, call a sober friend or use public transportation to get home safely from St. Patrick's Day parties.

Wet weather could nix weekend roadwork: "The Georgia Department of Transportation would like to get some work done on metro Atlanta roadways this weekend, but those plans may be washed away," GDOT spokesman Mark McKinnon said. While the rain isn't expected to arrive until midday Saturday, "some projects require more closure time for activities like striping and pouring concrete," McKinnon said.
