Flood watch in effect — and cold weather coming — for metro Atlanta

Much of the metro area remains under a flood watch through Wednesday evening — and colder weather will arrive before the end of the week.

Cobb, Cherokee, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Forsyth counties are under the watch, which went into effect at 7 a.m. Tuesday for areas of the state north of a line from Buchanan through Atlanta and Lawrenceville to Homer. A flood watch for parts of Fulton County was canceled Tuesday night.

Forecasters expect 1.5 to 2 inches of rain across north Georgia, with isolated higher amounts in the mountain counties. Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said metro Atlanta’s chance of rain is 80 percent through Wednesday.

Once the rain moves out Wednesday night, much cooler air will move in, Minton said.

After Monday’s near-record high of 72, which was only 4 degrees off the record for the date set in 1970, lows will be in the 30s by Thursday morning.

Minton said highs will be around 60 Wednesday, then only reach the mid-50s Thursday through Saturday. Morning lows will be in the mid-50s Wednesday and upper 30s Thursday and Friday, she said.
