In a busy week of tech and gaming news, it's Microsoft, not Apple, that is introducing new hardware.
At the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft on Monday debuted the Xbox One S, a redesigned version of its flagship console, 40 percent smaller and with support for 4K video streaming and 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. It launches in August with a $399 version and with subsequent $299 and $349 versions later in the year. The initial version is already available for pre-order on Amazon.
The company also teased "Project Scorpio" a more high-powered Xbox One successor that's due out at the end of 2017.
Both new consoles are presumably a win for AMD, which is supplying silicon for Microsoft. The company said in a statement, "We are proud that Microsoft has chosen to expand their Xbox One family of devices with two new consoles featuring AMD’s high-performance semi-custom SoCs (systems on a chip) that support revolutionary new technologies like HDR, 4K and high fidelity VR to enable the next generation of immersive gaming experiences.”
AMD has a large presence in Austin for graphics design and is of late making a push into hardware for VR.
Sony is on deck for its E3 press event Monday evening and Nintendo will follow on Tuesday. The week has also seen news from game makers including EA, Ubisoft and Bethesda.
