Wynalda introduced as Silverbacks manager

Jan 7, 2014

Eric Wynalda is going to bring a new approach to managing a soccer team.

Wynalda, who was introduced as the Silverbacks’ new manager on Tuesday, is mixing a bit of Europe with a bit of Mexico with a bit of Silicon Valley in an approach that will eliminate the head-coaching position.

“My experiences on this job and also taking all the experience that have culminated into something that we want to put into action,” said Wynalda, who was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2004 after making 106 appearances and scoring 34 goals for the national team.

Wynalda has been the Silverbacks’ technical director since being hired by co-owner Boris Jerkunica in the summer of 2012. He also manages Cal FC, an amateur side that he led to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2012.

He will replace Brian Haynes, who was let go in December. Terms of Wynalda’s contract weren’t released. He said that a tweet that he was only going to coach for nine games was inaccurate.
