Top 5 quarterback prospects for the NFL draft

April 27, 2014

The top five quarterback prospects (with draft projections):

1. Blake Bortles*, 6-5, 232 pounds, Central Florida (first round): American Athletic Conference coaches picked Bortles over Teddy Bridgewater as 2013 league player of the year. Bortles led the Knights to victories at Penn State and Louisville and against Baylor at the Fiesta Bowl. Bortles has great size for his position and also is a good athlete—he had the best vertical jump (32.5 inches) and broad jump (115 inches) were among the best marks for top prospects at the combine. NFL.com combine profile comment: "Is not yet a finished product and scouts' opinions vary on his ceiling, but elements of Bortles' skill set compare to some of the best in the game today, and his best football is ahead of him."

2. Teddy Bridgewater*, 6-2, 214, Louisville (first): Bridgewater was the 2012 Big East offensive player of the year as a sophomore. NFL.com combine profile comment: "Compensates for a lack of elite arm talent and prototype measureables with the intangibles and football intelligence that could elevate the other 52 players around him."

3. Johnny Manziel*, 5-11 ¾, 207, Texas A&M (first): Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, becoming the first freshman to do so, and also was SEC offensive player of the year. NFL.com combine profile comment: "A very unique, run-around, ad-lib, sandlot-style quarterback who consistently won games playing a brand of fast-paced, jailbreak football that often goes off script and can be difficult both to game plan with and against."

4. Derek Carr, 6-2, 214, Fresno State (second round): Carr's brother, David, was the No. 1 overall pick by Houston in 2002. NFL.com combine profile comment: "Elevated the Fresno State program and profiles like a gunslinger, though he'd be better served in the long run honing his game-management skills."

5. Tom Savage, 6-4, 228, Pittsburgh (second round): Played at Rutgers as a freshman and set Big East records for passing yards (2,211) and touchdowns (14) for a true first-year player. NFL.com combine profile comment: "Is inconsistent and in need of more reps, but has ample arm talent to warrant developmental consideration if teams deem his intangibles worthy of an investment."

Need area for Falcons?: No. Matt Ryan is the franchise quarterback and the Falcons seem content to continue with Dominique Davis as the backup.

Other teams in need of players at this position: Houston, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Oakland, Minnesota.

Top 5 for 2015 NFL draft: 1. Jameis Winston, 6-4, 235, Florida State; 2. Marcus Mariota, 6-4, 215, Oregon; 3. Bryce Petty, 6-3, 230, Baylor; 4. Brett Hundley, 6-3, 227, UCLA; 5. Sean Mannion, 6-4, 220, Oregon State.
