A year ago, Georgia Tech took in a transfer point guard who received an NCAA waiver to play immediately. Fortune appears to have blessed the Yellow Jackets again.

South Florida guard Josh Heath committed to Tech and coach Brian Gregory Sunday, skipping planned visits to Georgetown and Boston College. Heath, who averaged 3.6 assists and 2.6 points last season as a freshman, may not have to sit out a season because he was playing for his father Stan Heath, who was fired at the end of the season. Heath and Gregory were assistants together at Michigan State.

“We feel very good that (eligibility waiver) is going to happen,” the elder Heath said Monday. “It’s happened consistently over the years with coaching changes with fathers and sons and we’ve had strong indications from our compliance people that he should be able to play right away.”

Heath could step into the point guard spot vacated by Trae Golden, who played one season for the Jackets after transferring from Tennessee.

“I think I’m in a good spot and hopefully we can win some games,” Josh Heath said. “I think they’re really good.”
