The teammate who collided with UGA outfielder Johnathan Taylor wore the No. 2 jersey Tuesday in honor of the injured left fielder.

Instead of his regular No. 12, Zach Cone wore Taylor's number in a night game vs. Mercer, Christopher Lakos with the sports information office told the AJC.

Taylor and Cone, both juniors, collided head-on Sunday afternoon as both chased a line drive. Cone, of Stone Mountain, eventually was able to stand up and walk off the field.

But Taylor remained still on the field before being loaded into an ambulance and taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Athens. Taylor, who suffered a severe neck injury, underwent spinal surgery Monday afternoon and is expected to be moved to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta later this week.

The long-term prognosis for Taylor, of Acworth, is not yet known.

In one day, nearly 13,000 people visited a website created to send Taylor and his family words of encouragement. Hundreds of people posted messages to Taylor, who attended North Cobb High School.

Taylor compiled a .312 batting average in 117 games for the Bulldogs.
